New York State
Nobody calls Madonna by her last name; the same goes for Sade and sometimes Oprah. Pop artist Tiffany had a brief brush with last-namelessness before her failure and ensuing job search probably saw her last name reintroduced to common use, on applications and whatnot. Similarly, New York City is often truncated to New York. See, for instance, the soaring song, "New York, New York." You know, even without the context of the musical, that it refers to New York City in New York State. I say let's save New York State from New York City by referring to New York City as New York City and New York State as New York.
